The 788T is a powerful, eight input, 12-track digital audio recorder designed for production sound. Building on the success of the proven 7-Series architecture, the 788T offers greatly expanded input and output connectivity while continuing the 7-Series heritage of extensive control in a compact package.
Its eight full-featured inputs ensure superb audio quality. They accept either microphone or line-level signals, provide 48 V phantom power for condenser microphones, offer peak limiters for microphone inputs, and fully adjustable high-pass filters. Extensive routing flexibility allows each input to be routed to mixed tracks or to isolated tracks.
The 788T normally has three options for recording media, an internal 160 GB SATA hard drive or a SSD Solid State Drive*, CompactFlash media with UDMA support, or an external FireWire hard drive or DVD-RAM (with bus powering). Any or all of these can be used simultaneously. Additionally, when connected to Mac OS, or Windows computers with high-speed USB or FireWire 400/800, the 788T functions as a high-speed mass storage device.
To simplify interconnection with mixers and cameras with AES3 connectivity, the 788T has eight channels of balanced AES3 digital input and six channels of balanced AES3 output. The 788T can be clocked from external word clock or from video sync. The 788T has a high-accuracy time code reader/generator on board. It includes auto-record features to chase external rec-run video sources. To simplify metadata entry the 788T directly accepts USB keyboards. Keyboard shortcuts can be programmed to control menu items and machine transport. The extensive power of the 788T simplifies any production sound setup.

788T-SSD Portable Eight-Track Audio Recorder with Timecode; internal SSD
Sound Devices is introducing a new model to its recorder lineup, the 788T-SSD. This new, premium model of the 788T replaces the 160 GB SATA hard drive with a factory-supplied, high performance 256 GB solid-state drive. The addition of the SSD provides several important benefits including:

- Increased transfer speed versus a spinning hard drive
- Increased immunity to shock and temperature extremes

In addition to its superior shock immunity, the SSD drive used in the 788T-SSD enhances data transfer due to its increased transfer speed. The high-performance SSD medium in the 788T-SSD has faster read and write speeds than the 160 GB hard drive in the standard 788T. Like the standard 788T, the 788T-SSD is equipped with eight full-featured microphone inputs and twelve tracks of recording. In a stainless-steel and aluminum chassis weighing less than four pounds and roughly the size of a hard-covered novel, the 788T accommodates individual controls and connectors for each of its eight inputs, plus numerous additional I/O and data connections.

CL-WIFI interface for 788T

The CL-WIFI is a hardware accessory that provides the 788T and 788T-SSD Digital Recorder with WiFi connectivity. With a CL-WiFi connected to a 788T over the C.Link connection, the 788T is controllable by an Apple iOS device, such as an iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch running iOS version 4 or greater, users can control a 788T with the free CL-WiFi Controller app. The CL-WIFI hardware requires a 788T or 788T-SSD running firmware revision 2.14 or greater. The CL-8 is a powerful mixing control surface for the Sound Devices 788T recorder. Its large rotary faders and push buttons bring extensive mixer-type control to 788T inputs. The lightweight CL-8 can be used either mounted on or remote from the 788T.
The CL-8 features eight large, rotary faders to control levels of input-to-master-track (L, R) and input-to-aux-track levels (post-fade). With its tactile buttons, control over each input’s high-pass filter, limiter, polarity, mute status, and routing is quick with visual indication on the CL-8 front panel. The CL-8 provides shortcuts to route inputs to the left/right mix tracks and Aux1 and Aux2 tracks.
The CL-8 firmware adds additional record tracks to the 788T. These new tracks can be monitored in headphones, recorded, and routed to 788T outputs.

CL-2 Remote Fader for the 788T Recorders
The CL-2 Remote Fader adds a remote level control to any 788T input with its 30mm linear fader. It can be programmed to control any input or track on the 788T. Additionally the CL-2 is designed with two programmable, two-position switches on each side of the unit making it suitable for both left- and right-handed use. The switches can be programmed to operate functions on the 788T such as recording start and stop. The CL-2 is powered by the C.Link port on the 788T recorders and firmware revision 1.75 or higher is required for operation.
