CMIT 5U SHOTGUN MICROPHONE

Three pushbutton-activated filters:
- High-frequency emphasis (+5 dB at 10 kHz)
- Steep low-cut filter (18 dB/oct. below 80 Hz)
- Gentle low-frequency rolloff (6 dB/oct. below 300 Hz)

A pair of LEDs next to each filter pushbutton indicates the status (in/out) of each filter—a practical feature that is truly unique for a microphone of this type.
- Weight: An amazing 3 1/8 ounces
- 48 Volt phantom powering
- Superior RF immunity
- Unusually low coloration of off-axis sound, for a shotgun
- Pickup pattern is consistent in both the horizontal and vertical planes (unlike some popular shotguns)
- Increased directivity at medium frequencies
- Less sensitive to wind noise than a Schoeps CMC 641
- Schoeps sound quality makes the microphone suitable for music recording as well as dialogue
- Beautiful, blue anodized all metal housing

Schoeps: Innovation redefined
The focus on outstanding high quality, reliability, and neutral, accurate sound has been the production philosophy of Schoeps microphones since 1948. The simple elegance and clever engineering of their products reflects a true passion for the art of microphone manufacturing and a tireless attention to detail. Schoeps is most famous for its Colette Modular Microphone System, the most extensive and versatile microphone system ever conceived. Introduced in the early seventies, the Colette System is still the heart of the Schoeps line today. It was the first of its kind, allowing the use of various active accessories between the capsule and amplifier body and is undoubtedly the standard to which all other small-diaphragm microphones are compared. The CMIT 5U continues in this tradition of superb quality, innovation and functionality that all Schoeps products share.

Not your ordinary shotgun …

For years Schoeps has declined requests to produce a shotgun type microphone. The company felt if they were going to produce a shotgun microphone, there had to be some level of uniqueness and improvement. Besides the über-cool push buttons and LEDs, this microphone produces a natural sound not thought possible with an interference-tube design. It is only fitting that they finally are offering one since Schoeps’ Technical Director Joerg Wuttke, the Project Manager of the CMIT 5U had studied with and assisted the inventor of the interference tube "shotgun" microphone, Professor Günther Kurtze. Countless location recordists already use a Schoeps CMC 641 supercardioid in conjunction with their favorite non-Schoeps shotgun to handle all their audio capture needs. For the first time, users can enjoy an audible cohesion between their venerable CMC 641 and their shotgun.

The Schoeps CMIT 5U includes a wood box, WS 140 foam windscreen and a SG 20 stand clamp.

SuperCMIT DIGITAL SHOTGUN MICROPHONE

The SuperCMIT defines a new category of shotgun microphone, with directivity that goes beyond anything previously known. It offers the recording engineer entirely new possibilities.

Digital signal processing in the SuperCMIT recognizes sound energy arriving from various directions, and determines whether that sound has a discrete, persistent direction of arrival or not. It uses this information to suppress diffuse sound and to focus on discrete sound. This allows the “reach” of the shotgun microphone to be increased significantly, without causing the usual sound-coloring artifacts. The SuperCMIT is the first microphone in the world to combine such high directivity with high sound quality.

The Technology

The SuperCMIT 2 U has one capsule positioned behind its forward-facing interference tube, plus a second capsule that is aimed in the reverse direction. At frequencies below 6 kHz the signals of these two transducers are analyzed and compared by a digital signal processor using technology from Illusonic (patent applied for). It can recognize sound energy arriving from discrete directions, deduce whether its direction of arrival is persistent or not, and distinguish such energy from diffuse arriving sound.

This information is then used to focus on the discrete sound energy while suppressing the diffuse sound. Thus the ”reach” of this microphone is greatly increased, without artifacts or coloration of the sound.

Above 6 kHz the signal from the forwardfacing transducer is used without further processing, since the interference tube's effect is already optimal in that range.

The SuperCMIT is the first microphone in the world to offer such high directivity while maintaining such high quality sound.

Application

The SuperCMIT can be a problem-solver wherever diffuse sources of noise (such as street noise, wind noise, room sound, or from audience and passers-by) might interfere with a recording. Unwanted noise is greatly reduced in level – even at low frequencies--without altering the tone color of front-arriving direct sound. Even a shotgun with a long tube can’t do that. This makes the SuperCMIT ideal for complex film sound applications and for sports events. The SuperCMIT also increases the “reach” of indoor recordings.
